One of the most common areas for break-ins in the home is through the windows. So you need to make sure they are secure. Most windows have a sash lock, which locks the sash from moving up and down. You simply turn the lever, and it's locked.
The only problem with that is that an intruder can break a windowpane, reach in, unlock it, and they're in the house. Also, small children can easily get these open, which is a safety concern.

You can get a sash lock with a child security feature, which is a great solution for the child safety issue, but it doesn't prevent break-ins.

The next step is a keyed sash lock. You use a key to lock the sash, which keeps intruders from getting in and keeps children from opening it as well. It is important that you hide the keys somewhere close by so that you can get out if you need to.

Better yet is a bolt type sash lock. This lock still requires keys but it mounts directly to the sash. You can mount this one so that you can lock it in two positions: a closed position, and then a partially open position to allow air flow but not open enough for someone to get in, or out.
No matter what you choose, the key to window security is to make sure that you keep intruders from getting in but that you can get out in case of an emergency.
