How to Improve Your Workshop Storage

Learn how to maximize your workshop storage space; watch a video of installation of cabinets, pegboard and a wall storage system.

I set up my shop a couple of years ago, but didn't give too much thought on organization.  Since I've used it for a while, I have accumulated a lot of materials and small parts.  So I decided it's time for a shop makeover.

First thing of course is to clear out the entire work space.  All tools, materials, shelving, storage units etc. so you are left with a completely blank canvas.

2

Next, is to come up with a plan of how you would like your work space to be laid out.  I have made a sketch of my plan for one wall.  On the bottom, I'm going to put a run of base cabinets.  Some will have doors and some drawers.   On top of the cabinets, a heavy wood countertop.  Up above, I'll install wall cabinets with doors.  Finally, I'll leave a space in between the wall cabinets for a tool board. 3

The cabinets I'm using are from Stanley and are designed specifically for basements, garages and workshop storage. 4

These cabinets are strong, yet lightweight and hang very easily using a series of these clips, which are mounted to the wall in a level line. 5

The cabinet installation is very easy.  Mark a leveled line, I used an ArigGrip Laser Level by Ryobi... 6

...screw the clips in place along the line... 7

...hang the cabinets in place... 8

...and finally, secure the cabinet in place with a couple screws on in the inside. 9

For additional weight capacity and to keep the cabinet from pulling away from the wall, add clips to the bottom of the cabinet. 10

The base cabinets are even easier to install.  Simply roll them in place, check for level... 11

...and make necessary adjustments by screwing the leg bottoms up or down. 12

For the countertop I'm using a inch and a half thick solid hardwood. 13

The final part of this wall's workstation is to add the pegboard.  Add strips of 1 by 1 to create a gap behind the pegboard leaving space for the pegs to grip on the backside. 14

The pegboard is made with a surface that has a titanium-carbon fiber look.  Several drywall screws will attach the pegboard to the 1 by 2's and blend in so well, they are barely visible. 15

These plastic tool holders lock in place with a push of this white screw head.  They won't pull out when tools are removed or replaced... 16

...and they come in a variety of shapes for everything from pliers to drills. 17
