- They secured the flashing to the roof with screws.

4. Complete roof assembly:
- With the flashing in place, they slipped a section of the reflective tubing down through the center of the hole, then set the plastic roof dome in position and secured it with screws.
| |
5. Cut hole in ceiling:
- William used a drywall saw to cut the hole in the ceiling. It only took a matter of minutes.
| |
6. Assemble tubing
- They needed to construct a long tube, which would be inserted up through the hole they had just cut. This tube would then connect to the section they had already attached to the roof.
| |
- The tubing came in sections. They quickly and easily assembled the individual solar tube sections by inserting tabs through corresponding slots.
| |
- They used aluminium tape with a peel and stick backing to seal the joints. The tape helped to hold the sections together and prevent light from leaking out through the seams. They rubbed or burnished the tape with a cardboard roller to insure a good seal.
| |
- They assembled the first two sections of the tubing by simply inserting one inside the other. The joints were sealed with more aluminium tape. They carefully lifted the assembled sections and inserted the tube through the ceiling hole.
| |
7. Final installation
- They attached the flange on the bottom section to the ceiling with screws.
| |
- They snapped the diffuser in place, which softened the light in the room and completed their project.

RESULTS:
William was looking forward to Ron's visit and was really anxious to get more light into the family room, but was extremely nervous about sawing a hole in his roof. He never would have had the confidence to attempt it by himself. Ron knew that William was apprehensive so he presented him with a gift to remember his visit by…the hole! But the Braggs could never forget Ron! They are reminded of his visit every time they enter their bright, sunny family room. |
