How to Use Cleats to Hang Pictures

Learn how to hang heavy objects with a unique two-piece angled cleat system; includes step-by-step instructions on how to make the cleats.

A common way to hang a painting on a wall is to stretch a wire across the back. But when your painting is a canvas over a frame, it tends to hang away from the wall at the top. Ron has a simple way to avoid this and attach the painting so that it hangs completely flat.

First, create two cleats from a single piece of 1 x 4. Set the table saw blade at a 45 degree angle and rip the board down the center. Half of this cleat will attach to the wall and the other half attaches to the back of the painting. When the top piece slips over the bottom, it is locked firmly in place. Whatever it is that you hang on your wall is not going to go anywhere.

Locate the wall studs using an electronic stud sensor and then screw the wall cleat into one stud. Place a level on top, make adjustments if necessary, and then attach a second screw to hold the cleat in position.

Apply hot glue to the edge of the second cleat and press it into place on the inside of the frame. The adhesive will bond almost instantly.

Because the wall cleat is level, the picture will always be level, even if you choose to move it to the left or right, centering it over a piece of furniture or a section of wall.
