Ron's wife Lynn did not like the fact that they had to reach inside of the fireplace to light their gas logs. She suggested that Ron update the gas log set. Ron selected a new state-of-the-art system from Empire Comfort Systems that even comes with a remote control.

1. Dismantle old log set
Begin by shutting off the gas to the fireplace and then remove the artificial logs. Next, take out the grate and then disconnect the gas line and remove the old burner. Finally, clean out the firebox.

2. Install new set
The new fire set has three components: the burner, the logs and a wireless remote control. Begin by positioning the burner in the bottom of the firebox.
Apply pipe thread sealant to the gas connectors and then attach the gas supply line to the burner and snug the connection up tightly by using two wrenchs to tighten the two connectors in opposite directions.
It the system has a remote control electronic ignition, the small receiver should simply plug into the control box.
Set the burner in position and then use a masonry bit to drill holes into the brick on the bottom of the firebox. Finally, use masonry screws to secure the burner in place.

3. Check for gas leaks
Always check to see if there are any gas leaks before lighting the fire. To do this, turn the gas back on and then take a bottle of dishwashing detergent and water and spray the mixture on all the connections and fittings. If there are any leaks, you will see some fairly substantial soap bubbles.

4. Arrange logs and accessories
The artificial logs are made of concrete and are designed to fit together in a very specific pattern. The bottoms of the logs have holes, and the burner has pins so all you have to do is match them up.
Once the burner is installed and the logs are in place, there are additional accessories you can add as an option, to make the fire look even more convincing.

| Sprinkle the small blackened coals that look like remnants of earlier fires. Next, drop in a few ash-coated coals for added realism. Then arrange the small pieces that look like partially burned wood around the base of the logs. All of these materials are non-combustible.
|
|
| |
|
| Finally, place small pieces of rock wool over special ports in the burner. When the log set is operating, these tufts of rock will glow like hot coals creating a very convincing appearance.

5. Remote control
One of the best features of this system is the remote control. You can turn the fireplace off and on from anywhere in the room, and better yet, the remote also serves as a thermostat. You can preset the desired room temperature, which will automatically turn the log set on and off, keeping the room at a constant temperature.
