How to Build a Porch Stairway

Learn how to install stairs to an existing porch or deck; includes tips on working with stringers, treads, and risers; materials and tool lists.
Tools and supplies:
      Level
      Power drill
      Square-head driver bit
      Reciprocating saw
      Safety goggles
      Japanese hand saw
      Jig saw
      Pencils
      Clamp
      Power miter box
      Bevel gauge
      Combination square

Materials:
      Pre-cut stringers
     Concrete pavers
     Sand
     Pressure treated lumber as needed for risers, treads, rim joist attachment
     4X4 posts for railing
     Railing lumber
     6" Carriage bolts (and nuts)
     Joist hangers
     6" Hex-head lag screws (4" if no extension is made to the rim joist)
     Stainless steel screws
